<br />
I wanted to post about my first grandbaby Livvey's birthday party. It had an elephant theme because her parents were celebrating a peanut (that is what they called her until they found out they were having a girl).<br />

We started 2 years ago but still have more things to do. The shop seems to be one area that we have dumped things for years. But I have a vision and we will get there. We really love being in the workshop during the fall. We have put a TV in there and being college football freaks, this is our favorite place to be during football season. We are also purging and organizing as we go. We stopped last year and decided to work on the garage. We had the estate sale and cleaned out the garage and now we are going back to the shop. They both go hand in hand. There are things that we use (gardening, painting, tools) that go in one place or the other. So working on both is slow but so worth it. Since college football is starting back up, we will be heading back into the workshop. <br />
<br />
Today a friend told me that her husband and she are starting to work on her husband's workshop and wanted some ideas. So I decided to post some pictures we have taken as we started to work on ours.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6qdEuO_EVdGzt5_sGTT6tA1lWb3nb2R29e3br0Xn32_zCs8i4-a6YakInx31HTAhb8NUfECj0gsqjV7FD41sNkbpZGHae83ry76zFxO_iZ5qUPGMkVwEEaVneN4efCTFv1WJmS0kWM30/s1600/027.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6qdEuO_EVdGzt5_sGTT6tA1lWb3nb2R29e3br0Xn32_zCs8i4-a6YakInx31HTAhb8NUfECj0gsqjV7FD41sNkbpZGHae83ry76zFxO_iZ5qUPGMkVwEEaVneN4efCTFv1WJmS0kWM30/s1600/027.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the before picture of the right room. The workshop has 2 rooms and we have only finished the right room. It was a mixture of garden tools, Christmas decorations, painting supplies, plumbing supplies, etc. You get the picture. It had cheap paneled walls and a drop down ceiling. All were bowing and falling apart. This workshop was built about 25 years ago.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvlRvueXidEU7I5TRe5bGrp0VbE75KZ9z1R3d2dQ7L1v-7hHNOdx7FA1HG4qjCAn2GBsaDTAhWM6qLIm3myGduhcLk-ywYxCXABf8gK_cviABD-mNH6ejgCNs4YHZ5qB1IuFzr3M5bLwI/s1600/038.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvlRvueXidEU7I5TRe5bGrp0VbE75KZ9z1R3d2dQ7L1v-7hHNOdx7FA1HG4qjCAn2GBsaDTAhWM6qLIm3myGduhcLk-ywYxCXABf8gK_cviABD-mNH6ejgCNs4YHZ5qB1IuFzr3M5bLwI/s1600/038.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
The ceiling was insulated with 6 inch Styrofoam. We removed the ceiling and the walls and got down to the studs. I will say I was knee deep in dead varmits and rat poop. Not a good place to be in. But we all feel this way from time to time. (LOL)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We're still working. I painted the concrete floor a darker gray and bought <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-48-in-Floor-Cabinet-48FC01BP-THD/202600940#.UjD_cbzD-Cg" target="_blank">Husky Storage</a> which looks great, is durable and lockable.</div>

Many have married and now are have babies. Here is a recent baby shower we hosted for Michelle. I am so proud of my daughters and their friends. They know how to host a party.<br />

You know, we all have one. <br />
<br />
Having an empty nest also means grandchildren and baby food jars. I found that Beechnut Baby Food was cheaper than the others. I saved the jars believing I could find something to do with them. I recycle everything in my house and always try to think of another way to reuse things.<br />
<br />
I am so proud of my spice cabinet now that I am including a picture. Now Thomas can find what he needs while he's cooking. (I am not the cook in the house!)<br />

Here is a before and after. I love the G, it gives it the Graves touch!<br />
<br />
I used <a href="http://www.avery.com/avery/en_us/Products/Labels/Home-Organization-Labels/Business-Builder-Glossy-White-Labels-Oval-1_.5x2_.5-18-up_22814.htm?N=0&Ns=&refchannel=c042fd03ab30a110VgnVCM1000002118140aRCRD" target="_blank">Avery 22814 Labels</a> that I found at my local Wal-Mart. <br />

<br />
Then I went to Avery's web site and used one their templates and my ink jet printer.<br />
<br />
I painted the lids with <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rust-Oleum-Universal-11-oz-All-Surface-Metallic-Titanium-Silver-Spray-Paint-and-Primer-in-One-261400/202895261#.UiTg0rzD-Cg" target="_blank">Rustoleum Titanium</a> that I found at my local Home Depot.<br />

I found my mother's first sewing basket and wooden thread spools while going through her things before the estate sale.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I love sitting at my sewing machine and looking at her sewing items. It feels like she is right here with me!<br />

We are planning a Saturday class. I still do not have a definite date but Miriam and I are working out the details. I will be posting pictures for inspiration.<br />
<br />
I just wanted to give anyone who is interested some notice. This is will give you some time to locate a piece. I recommend any thing that is solid wood. Unless it is has real wood veneer on solid wood. I have done this piece and it came out great.<br />
<br />
Look in your attic, your mother's or grandmother's house. Go to estate or yard sales. Go to Brady's and Bush's here in Cordele. I have found some great pieces there.<br />
<br />
You will be responsible to bring and remove your piece on the day of the workshop so I would like for you to bring a small manageable piece such as end tables, small chests, etc. I will be teaching you everything you will need to know to go home and do bigger pieces.<br />
<br />
Here is a changing table that Genie found for Livvey's room. It is a large chest but this is probably the biggest piece that we can accomplish in a day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp0EjgwcyTG-FFz4cThmODTJW6cL6WO9Hh2YLRFkt-9x1ZD-MBmgROy8DtalLiR8d-PRCUDLRVkFomOzn8ui0YQw45HbpTpb26fMQdx-8RsEZHkMC2VPbWoaasabYQSfvHwMq3ywdktuA/s1600/197.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp0EjgwcyTG-FFz4cThmODTJW6cL6WO9Hh2YLRFkt-9x1ZD-MBmgROy8DtalLiR8d-PRCUDLRVkFomOzn8ui0YQw45HbpTpb26fMQdx-8RsEZHkMC2VPbWoaasabYQSfvHwMq3ywdktuA/s1600/197.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfAJq3q67_81b4WEbX6LgE8H8Lz5xbEOY_m8XHflnmC0oFsyB5hliyKYa5xHv9fLBVV-48yYlrDMk46T-kWrQn42s_npo9zSTZLe537qkOgNZCSFRGcDkoJYhQC-Ev55hRmC7tY9-nh0o/s1600/198.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfAJq3q67_81b4WEbX6LgE8H8Lz5xbEOY_m8XHflnmC0oFsyB5hliyKYa5xHv9fLBVV-48yYlrDMk46T-kWrQn42s_npo9zSTZLe537qkOgNZCSFRGcDkoJYhQC-Ev55hRmC7tY9-nh0o/s1600/198.JPG" /></a></div>
<br />
We found this "Ethan Allen" piece (yes it really was Ethan Allen) at a flea market in Douglas GA. The downtown there has several markets side by side that are also a great source for shopping for pieces.<br />
<br />
If you want to change knobs, please let me know ahead of time. I will need you to do a few things before the class.<br />
<br />
I will also try to do a piece during the workshop as well. <br />
<br />
I am sooooo stinking excited!!!<br />

I looked at mirrored furniture but it wasn't quite right. I saw my mother's bedside table and got an idea. I painted it with silver paint. It gave me the look with out the $500 price for only $12.<br />

<br />
I painted the furniture in Polished Silver and the hardware in Thundercloud. The Precious Moments firgurine is a gift from my parents: Adoption, because I was adopted. I love it and so appropriate for the nursery. I found the frame and the lamp at TJMaxx. <br />
<br />
I saved $488. More money for retirement!<br />

I came across this 1960s side table. We had them when we were little, our grandmother or mother probably still has one or we have seen them at garage sales or estate sales. What I love about older furniture is that it is all wood, well made and will last!<br />
<br />
Before picture after I brought it home. BTW I paid $28 dollars for it.<br />
<br />

I had bought my furniture in late 80s or early 90s. We all know it. The rice bed set.<br />

<br />
I put them on a cardboard box and it was a lot easier.<br />
<br />
They came with these screws already inserted (the ones on the left) and we exchanged them for the ones on the right to get a good buttress with the legs and the furniture. <br />
<br />

I painted it with home made <a href="http://www.reclaimingtheemptynest.blogspot.com/2013/07/reclaiming-1950s-vanity-with-chalk-paint.html" target="_blank">chalk paint</a>. $3260 minus $150 supplies = $3110 savings! Hello IRA!!!<br />

I loved my lamps but they really didn't match my new décor and colors. Not the shape, but the color. So I decided to spray them. Took me all of 10 minutes. I saved at least $200 by not replacing them, and they look great on my painted furniture. Before:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkS2KcM1f2bkptGLIY-HHwzzNTnM5crNxU6YMof6KSKyzGkPlqseeHsNomNm2ZdyqUB6DhnYOST2_S6HiKECBGEkDyu8Cqihz9hPIFA49b3zdxXp3yFyl7SfZecig54spvJan6LaYeZSs/s1600/MBR+lamps+before.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkS2KcM1f2bkptGLIY-HHwzzNTnM5crNxU6YMof6KSKyzGkPlqseeHsNomNm2ZdyqUB6DhnYOST2_S6HiKECBGEkDyu8Cqihz9hPIFA49b3zdxXp3yFyl7SfZecig54spvJan6LaYeZSs/s1600/MBR+lamps+before.jpg" height="640" width="322" /></a></div>
<br />
As you can see these are absolutely beautiful but the gold, patina color did not match. Here is the after:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQJhy_Erp2P3PriMW-FscS_PVH-WSoJnTcxYnqeKSgP8HPUlmASgO0v8NUlTpoazg45giKkOP1fA4-gHXVb-YtXNZBgMDFq8ArI-fM3xcoe_IEqErLEnDorYILbimcOMxalaml91HEIpw/s1600/MBR+lamps+after.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQJhy_Erp2P3PriMW-FscS_PVH-WSoJnTcxYnqeKSgP8HPUlmASgO0v8NUlTpoazg45giKkOP1fA4-gHXVb-YtXNZBgMDFq8ArI-fM3xcoe_IEqErLEnDorYILbimcOMxalaml91HEIpw/s1600/MBR+lamps+after.jpg" height="320" width="181" /></a></div>

We needed the storage but also the punch of color. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9-8_J1uChJPpZxvJSDAIvNDu-jLfhchAbX25dlmN9uWHkzWetGWHArir3BeCFg5Nq6ndC3mA4QTr3H7S6wyQa0qHF6cUPbr1zsOkUGtn5XL9etWA2YImqdQM8JeL8PZ3LiDyq2qTMRF8/s1600/IMG_0420.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9-8_J1uChJPpZxvJSDAIvNDu-jLfhchAbX25dlmN9uWHkzWetGWHArir3BeCFg5Nq6ndC3mA4QTr3H7S6wyQa0qHF6cUPbr1zsOkUGtn5XL9etWA2YImqdQM8JeL8PZ3LiDyq2qTMRF8/s1600/IMG_0420.JPG" height="277" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
We started heading to used furniture stores in search of the perfect dresser. We got lucky and found it at the first store we stopped at for $50. It was a steal. All wood. No mirror but we didn't need one.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmLgatYlc1S08EN7Dfdjk83C95ju1nnS8wsylujfP8XasrxWyeig1Y6qBFxSfuvp4W-IW2nXL6r-SHjv4Vwkf-FaJTjL503ivs3ozfZJg2QSYDOsg7r7ZLe-gnqd_ANPHE9Tvf8tOOih0/s1600/123.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmLgatYlc1S08EN7Dfdjk83C95ju1nnS8wsylujfP8XasrxWyeig1Y6qBFxSfuvp4W-IW2nXL6r-SHjv4Vwkf-FaJTjL503ivs3ozfZJg2QSYDOsg7r7ZLe-gnqd_ANPHE9Tvf8tOOih0/s1600/123.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I loved the detail, but when we painted it the detailing just jumped out. I removed the drawer pulls, spackled the holes, and sanded. I didn't sand the furniture. I just used Behr paint with primer in satin so there is no need to sand. If you are planning to distress, I would use chalk paint. See my post <a href="http://www.reclaimingtheemptynest.blogspot.com/2013/07/reclaiming-1950s-vanity-with-chalk-paint.html" target="_blank">Chalk Paint Recipe and Instructions</a>. We left it plain so I just used straight paint. I always paint furniture with a sponge brush, not because it is cheap, but because it goes on smoother and doesn't leave brush strokes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I drilled holes for new knobs. I love the large glass knobs at Home Depot <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/p/Liberty-Clear-Satin-Nickel-Acrylic-1-3-4-in-Knob-P19443-116-CP/202935125#.UfHJ3bzD-Cg" target="_blank">Glass Knobs</a>. They are $6 each and with 10, they actually cost more than the dresser, but it was worth it. I then drilled holes in the back and add extension cords that fed into certain drawers. One drawer to charge Iphone and Kindle. One drawer for the laptop. And behind the doors, where I removed the drawers and installed the Satellite and DVR.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
BTW, the candle sticks and the plant came from <a href="http://www.tjmaxx.com/" target="_blank">TJ Maxx</a>. You really need to go to TJ Maxx or Home Goods to get accessories for reasonable prices. I love these stores and try to stop in often.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I would love to see your dressers to TV stands!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: blue; font-size: x-large;">Happy Reclaiming!</span></div>

We started with nothing but after looking at flea markets and used furniture stores, we were able to furnish her dining room with a modern but classy look.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz2ZDpacXv6RlH9xOzDBs875DotVwCX2awZrsjKYE172U-foXlVvk8cjuO28mtJsj8axUwynk4fp5p0pT9QAFuEcs1cFae1mJgIT3TMqtQPQlZbc9P4BLkxfXZ4gTlZmAxjyHWPT9Gj80/s1600/Becca's+Dining+Room.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiz2ZDpacXv6RlH9xOzDBs875DotVwCX2awZrsjKYE172U-foXlVvk8cjuO28mtJsj8axUwynk4fp5p0pT9QAFuEcs1cFae1mJgIT3TMqtQPQlZbc9P4BLkxfXZ4gTlZmAxjyHWPT9Gj80/s1600/Becca's+Dining+Room.jpg" width="376" /></a></div>
<br />
We loved it! Its classy, sophisticated, and chic. All done on a budget. Here are the components:<br />
<br />
First the table. We found this at a flea market with nasty parson chairs. It was absolutely gorgeous! I asked the seller about buying just the table without the chairs. If he said no, I was ready to pick up the table and throw the chairs in the dumpster. The set was $150 and he sold me the table for $100! This is probably the best steal I'll ever see. The table has a leaf and comes with a custom table pad. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDV7JXCqFAE3S4c8pTQ6mMnhlOXl0TLyQp-5GF9x3C2eeZJy02EnzyxLd2FkqyGsJ02BjQ72NNqH3BRS4CB7oNt_zJW7bWrjTh1y0aiflt3Yn1CXPSi41dgaeshzkwGdZdsUeSt41iAgs/s1600/Becca+Dining+Room+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDV7JXCqFAE3S4c8pTQ6mMnhlOXl0TLyQp-5GF9x3C2eeZJy02EnzyxLd2FkqyGsJ02BjQ72NNqH3BRS4CB7oNt_zJW7bWrjTh1y0aiflt3Yn1CXPSi41dgaeshzkwGdZdsUeSt41iAgs/s1600/Becca+Dining+Room+5.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOg8de5y7o745Ck6-VMuFbRAuB-rfxcoUtT_UedJWA1_l87jebJJKyOxp_AE2FWG4wzl5qk6suAyIrg1R1nL4euDeHQZ-WkDYbQY0avjMjJmKUm-YvI-z52y42t0okC-UepkDRwglhvAs/s1600/Becca+Dining+Room+6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOg8de5y7o745Ck6-VMuFbRAuB-rfxcoUtT_UedJWA1_l87jebJJKyOxp_AE2FWG4wzl5qk6suAyIrg1R1nL4euDeHQZ-WkDYbQY0avjMjJmKUm-YvI-z52y42t0okC-UepkDRwglhvAs/s1600/Becca+Dining+Room+6.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
It has great details as you can see. It would have been $2000 at an antique dealer. And still well worth that.<br />
<br />
Then I went to a used furniture store here in Cordele. The owner goes to sales when a hotel changes furniture and found these spider back chairs. Yes, the seat cover covered with plastic. These were $20 each.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtV1U6dtRd2oVzEdQujNrHcaOmSV2wqk6g14vqlBsJ89v5dxyy-2d9JiuankC04bbLCoAq3lVGtc3dwWEYaO-zhP3Whi56qJyhYq34Bi6GS76cgUXRHiHslsanfN7H4uCSuQxrE2aGmJQ/s1600/100.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtV1U6dtRd2oVzEdQujNrHcaOmSV2wqk6g14vqlBsJ89v5dxyy-2d9JiuankC04bbLCoAq3lVGtc3dwWEYaO-zhP3Whi56qJyhYq34Bi6GS76cgUXRHiHslsanfN7H4uCSuQxrE2aGmJQ/s1600/100.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
I bought 4 ($100 dollars) and brought them home. We then spray painted them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjupAq4GBobpuKf9wsmpRs64gwqvprBQui-xlQYzYChw_N6yJdhIU12Y8_W9-L0L9_JxiSkk-eDYrJNpa2FWfvtMXfeyki0NRhr24QM_QaxUV7YWaAF_sxBPSec5w5CBEBV3V9hhj_a22s/s1600/110.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="199" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjupAq4GBobpuKf9wsmpRs64gwqvprBQui-xlQYzYChw_N6yJdhIU12Y8_W9-L0L9_JxiSkk-eDYrJNpa2FWfvtMXfeyki0NRhr24QM_QaxUV7YWaAF_sxBPSec5w5CBEBV3V9hhj_a22s/s1600/110.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I recovered the seat with fabric I already had left over from recovering my dining room chairs. I found this at <a href="http://www.lsfabric.com./" target="_blank">www.lsfabric.com.</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I think it looks more elegant but the biggest reason is storage. This is where I store luggage. It's so easy to reach under the bed, grab the luggage, throw it on the bed and start packing.<br />
<br />
I don't like bed risers. They are so ugly, stick out (where we all stump our toes), and look cheap. I recently bought an new bed frame. It was standard height and we had an elevated rice bed before and we felt we were laying on the floor. Even my husband said he felt he was in the wrong house. <br />
<br />
I bought the standard bed risers from Wal-Mart. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbdsxbXutCyZNh8U5dl5Lu_GeBYJEgW-TIWb52n5sfSvgiKsEQr-YwrJeKTbwm3nO63KO7hJ6xEZz_kOzz8YqCXJYEn9T8-ru3vA_rd5mIKzBoFvdlVqFjeKOxQ-RVq0T9HpAWk9zanNQ/s1600/riser6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbdsxbXutCyZNh8U5dl5Lu_GeBYJEgW-TIWb52n5sfSvgiKsEQr-YwrJeKTbwm3nO63KO7hJ6xEZz_kOzz8YqCXJYEn9T8-ru3vA_rd5mIKzBoFvdlVqFjeKOxQ-RVq0T9HpAWk9zanNQ/s1600/riser6.JPG" height="320" width="293" /></a></div>
<br />
I hated the look and the way they were visible and stuck out under the bed skirt. It cheapened the look I was going for. I got online to find something else but couldn't find anything that looked like a furniture leg.<br />
<br />
I went to Home Depot. The furniture feet in their millwork section were not tall enough. I went to the deck section and found a post topper that was the right height. If I turned it upside down, it was perfect. One hitch: How do I make it work. Well I presented the problem to my husband. As always, if it can be done, he will find a way. And he did. I am posting how to make your bed risers look like furniture legs for as little as $15. <br />
<br />
First we started with the feet that came with the frame:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOQsQdKCaiNlJSwtoE_L5rh3i0KziEWa8LBEAHeK_cAGCMrrxQDb0Ef6z2YUIkrrFATcv_HCLhM9Pdzo1-AOcvp5l2PCNis7oeCo8TXJKBoU2hMizESM0g_uFIbWCg6an5e7HXMmBLGpY/s1600/riser3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOQsQdKCaiNlJSwtoE_L5rh3i0KziEWa8LBEAHeK_cAGCMrrxQDb0Ef6z2YUIkrrFATcv_HCLhM9Pdzo1-AOcvp5l2PCNis7oeCo8TXJKBoU2hMizESM0g_uFIbWCg6an5e7HXMmBLGpY/s1600/riser3.JPG" height="320" width="283" /></a></div>
<br />
Then he added a piece of wood on the inside and drilled a hole in it to match the screw on the deck post topper:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIepo5bNjsHgW2qcjG0sx79qdVJ2l7qM0gGqx0mo7XXwHObxyP8tAE2YgFwDmzFPVS2n8gVUrQibQ-RSy9Meu8rF70oBbRlX76Z9AW0V416FG4NCgi4NGXXNhwVDZ0OSUMAheJ9BiAeBs/s1600/riser2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIepo5bNjsHgW2qcjG0sx79qdVJ2l7qM0gGqx0mo7XXwHObxyP8tAE2YgFwDmzFPVS2n8gVUrQibQ-RSy9Meu8rF70oBbRlX76Z9AW0V416FG4NCgi4NGXXNhwVDZ0OSUMAheJ9BiAeBs/s1600/riser2.JPG" height="297" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the deck post topper:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIBHDLXjzevOLsUprB38mXmWywi8HT8H8iWjjp-ZOqnw4ehU_Loglt9se4VGL5WuxWmqkz1D6B4UeCB9_Xg16kiqMQjSLghCFRndnU6MKtPNKhAtwqqkg-hHklziMmtLv6KjqQODEUzUE/s1600/riser1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIBHDLXjzevOLsUprB38mXmWywi8HT8H8iWjjp-ZOqnw4ehU_Loglt9se4VGL5WuxWmqkz1D6B4UeCB9_Xg16kiqMQjSLghCFRndnU6MKtPNKhAtwqqkg-hHklziMmtLv6KjqQODEUzUE/s1600/riser1.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
You can find it at Home Depot <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/p/WeatherShield-4-in-x-4-in-Pressure-Treated-Unfinished-Pine-Ball-Top-Finial-102615/100051746#.Ue29rLzD-Cg">http://www.homedepot.com/p/WeatherShield-4-in-x-4-in-Pressure-Treated-Unfinished-Pine-Ball-Top-Finial-102615/100051746#.Ue29rLzD-Cg</a> for $3.27 each.<br />
<br />
We screwed them in an thought it was still not stable enough so he screwed in 4 more screws from the top:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGzJ3_Jj8ZgtGWIURwWxTplPT6OvkfFL5wll57cw41BCcTM1FPrb37LwZVXORqKbVW02SVVTymY8U8rg87_Ywr9Kmet-ujrnGDKw1wv1ahont72JORltxjVPeZKNykz4VmCPyo3EhKrhc/s1600/Riser.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGzJ3_Jj8ZgtGWIURwWxTplPT6OvkfFL5wll57cw41BCcTM1FPrb37LwZVXORqKbVW02SVVTymY8U8rg87_Ywr9Kmet-ujrnGDKw1wv1ahont72JORltxjVPeZKNykz4VmCPyo3EhKrhc/s1600/Riser.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Then, I painted them to match my other furniture and installed them:<br />
<br />

<br />
Now look at my finished product:<br />

<br />
Exactly what I wanted. I am finishing the bedroom and will post more pictures later.<br />

What is so unique about it is the bench is still intact. We find these everywhere but few still have the seat. My friend had just bought a new house and needed a piece for her 12 year old daughter's room. I sent her a picture and she wanted me to pick it up for just $100. It was in great shape. I painted it with chalk paint which I made (so recipe below), distressed it with sand paper and sealed with wax. After a year, she still has so many people be in awe of the piece. I love it. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was just the piece for her room. I love the fabric! Her daughter picked it out after I took her to Atlanta to Forsyth Fabrics and Lewis and Sharon Textiles. We had a blast that day. She picked out all her fabrics and helped me do everything from the painting, sanding and sewing. I will soon post pictures of her entire room. It looks just like a tween room.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Chalk paint recipe:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2 cups paint (I use Behr with primer in eggshell from Home Depot)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1/3 cup Plaster of Paris</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2 Tbsp water</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mix well and apply with sponge brush. It may take a few coats but sanding is much easier and it sticks so well that I don't ever sand before application regardless of the original finish. I have tried different brushes but I feel the cheap sponge brush is the best.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can glaze it at this point if you like.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Seal with Paste wax from minwax found in the stain section at Home Depot.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will be posting other furniture reclaims I've done over the past year. I would love to see your pictures too. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

She embroidered these when she was a teenager in the 1940s and put them in her hope chest (that's another blog). I washed and starched them and then framed them. I put them in my laundry room. It also brings in a completely different set of customers than a yard sale. I had things left of my Mom's, Thomas' mother, and our things.<br />
<br />
<img alt="Photo: Estate Sale started good. We had to leave before we got blocked in. Thank you Lynne Kolbie Brown." class="scaledImageFitWidth img" height="693" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/p480x480/1001338_10152357858236758_263310256_n.jpg" style="top: -39px;" width="504" /><br />

<br />
We have completed the estate sale. It was a huge success but I still have a lot of things left. I had many options on what to do with these things. <br />
<br />
1. Have auction company come pick up what is left and sale it at a commission. <br />
<br />
2. Donate to charity.<br />
<br />
3. Yard Sale.<br />
<br />
Well I have decided to have a yard sale. Since it is July and it is getting hotter, I decided to wait until fall. That will give me time to continue to clean out my house and add to it. Since it is so hot, it is easier to stay inside and get the cleaning done. I have already cleaned out my utility room, which is very large, and have already added several boxes full. I am pricing as I pack to make the yard sale much easier.<br />
<br />
It was so emotional to go through this process, but Lynne Brown was so easy to work with. She had no emotional attachment to anything. It would have taken me years to accomplish what she did in one month. <br />
<br />
Since it is over, I am starting back on my bedroom and I have some great things going and I can't wait to share these over the next few weeks. <br />
<br />
Distractions are always felt to be negative. However, I have be given a God given distraction. I have embraced this as positive. One month ago, I signed a contract with Lynne to have the Estate Sale this weekend, only to learn in a few days that our close friends were visiting from Arkansas.<br />
<br />
Thomas immediately wanted to change the date of the sale, but I said NO. Our friends would understand. We would be out and about with them and away from the house. A God given distraction. I embraced it and I now know it is just what I needed.<br />
<br />
I am now looking around. Our distraction has arrived. Everyone has gone to bed and it is just me. I walk through the estate sale looking at everything. I want to make sure that there is nothing I want to keep. I find 3 things, that's all.<br />
<br />
As I put them aside, I am surrounded by Neena and Meemaw. I can feel them everywhere. But it is peaceful. They are telling me it is Ok. Enjoy your distraction and let go. As I sit here all alone with them, I smile and feel so comforted.<br />
<br />
Tomorrow morning I will wake to my distraction. I can walk, no run away, and toward our new memories. I can't wait for the next phase that God has in store for us.<br />
<br />
This distraction does not have any feeling of negative. My close friends are with us, helping us to let go. As we make the next step in our lives, we are focused. We continue to dream.<br />
<br />
I will wake up to helping Thomas cook breakfast, hugging on our friends and their children. Letting go with the best distraction ever. I'm reminded of Craig Morgan's song "This Ain't Nothing". He tells a story about a man whose house is destroyed by a tornado. It really puts into perspective things, stuff, etc and memories. I keep playing it in my head.</div><div><br></div><div>What would my feelings be if a tornado came and destroyed our parents stuff? We have memories that are priceless, that no tornado or estate sale can take away,</div><div><br></div><div>Now I have a renewed prospective. This will get me through watching people rummaging. They are only a tornado.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15490255539972630262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2648909703117200280.post-24247749376900425582013-06-17T18:02:00.001-07:002013-06-17T18:02:47.962-07:00Freeze FrameHow many times in our lives do we just freeze frame. I was working on my master bedroom and this happened.<br />
<br />
I knew I had some things in the garage that belonged to Thomas' and my Mom that I wanted to incorporate. But where to find them?<br />
<br />
I have a three car garage that is filled with their memories. It took me this long to deal with their deaths and all their memories that I inherited.<br />
<br />
Initially, I wanted to build a shrine to honor our parents. So I could not rid myself of their stuff (memories). So fast forward 3 years:<br />
<br />
I now have all their memories. It took me this long to grieve and to realize that what was precious to them was not precious to me. I know they were minimalists and would not want me to have this burden.<br />
<br />
Yes, it is a burden to have these memories inherited to Thomas and me. Where do we start, what do we do?<br />
<br />
When I started on my bedroom, I started digging. Then I realized it is bigger than me. I started with ebay, and I couldn't get any response to what I asked (remember that this is memories that have emotions attached and not just stuff).<br />
<br />
So I freeze framed.<br />
<br />
I searched and found someone who does estate sales. Lynne Brown. She has come in with everything in boxes, not knowing what is in there (nor did we). She has been so respectful. Yet everyday we come in with our nightly to do list. It has been tiring.<br />
<br />
The sale is this coming weekend. I have worked so hard.<br />
<br />
The girls came over and spent 2 weekends going through the attic and their rooms. I have loved seeing them find things that were lost. Heart broken at the things that they chose to trash. This is their stuff not mine. That was huge for me. To let go of trophys, medals, pictures. I thought I would go back and pull these things out of the trash and WHAT? Put it in a box for them to throw out when I'm gone. Letting go. Its hard.<br />
<br />
So I freeze framed my redecorating to deal with these memories.<br />
<br />
I will post pictures in the future.<br />
<br />
Its OK to freeze frame. <br />

It was like stepping into Antropologie (which is one of my favorite stores). I was looking for things for a brunch. They have paper runners of different designs and colors. These are perfect for parties.<br />
<br />
<img alt="Photo: New Spring table decor in stock, paper place mats and napkins! The best part is there no mess to clean up!" class="scaledImageFitWidth img" height="403" src="https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/p480x480/599608_477951288937361_1044011672_n.jpg" width="403" /><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
They also have coordinating placemats and napkins. The table runner and placemats are heavy duty paper and the napkins are cloth and last through 6-8 washings.<br />
<br />
They just bought Devae Smith's invitation business. Thank you Whitney for all your help today.<br />
<br />
We are so lucky to have stores like this and Sakari, Three's Company, Judy's Small World, Savannah Rose, and Flint River Pottery. All are locally owned and operated.<br />
<br />
Shop and buy Cordele.<br />

First: My youngest daughter got a job in another town, sooooo we have been busy finding her a place to live, getting her moved, and setting up her apartment. I must say it looks great! We have many DIY projects and I will do another post about that. BTW she loves, loves, loves her new job and being back in the town with all her friends. I can hear so much happiness in her voice and that is the most precious sound for a mother. That was one step forward.<br />
<br />
Second: We rented Mom's house (which is a guest house in our back yard). We have been renting it furnished. It is filled with Mom's and my mother in law's stuff that up until now we have not had to deal with making decisions about what to do with it. We rented it to someone who has her own things and really didn't need anything but a few pieces of furniture. So if my garage and house weren't already in dire straits, they certainly are now. I love my new neighbor, she is the mother to my next door neighbor and we continue to bless others the way we were able to bless our mothers. This is happening while I have my bedroom tore up for redecorating.<br />
<br />
Now I have all this STUFF. It certainly is a treasure trove of antiques and collectibles, but also memories. I really feel like I'm living "Hoarders Buried Alive". But this will make me deal with these things that I have putting off for 3-4 years. Add this to all the STUFF that the girls have dumped at my house and I truly have an empty nest that needs to be reclaimed.<br />
<br />
Third: Now I start to deal with all of this. This is my plan:<br />
1. Every night I try to keep my house picked up.<br />
2. Deal with garbage emails. I have already started unsubscribing from a lot of junk email.<br />
3. Set aside a box for Habitat for Humanity donations. Put one thing in that box each day and drop off weekly.<br />
4. List something for sale first on the local swap shops on facebook. If it doesn't sale in 7 days, then list on ebay or put in Habitat box. <br />
5. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING NEW!!!!!!!!!!! Enough said.<br />
6. Go through one box at a time. Luckily it is in the garage and I can bring one in at a time and completely go through everything and deal with it.<br />
<br />
This is one step forward. I'm too embarrassed to post any before pictures, but I will keep you updated as I go down this road.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15490255539972630262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2648909703117200280.post-39626699271895703792013-03-26T11:44:00.000-07:002013-03-26T11:44:12.109-07:00Reclaiming the PillowsI have been doing a lot of sewing of pillows lately and thought I would show a few projects and speak of how to reclaim your pillows.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirNXNwMgfK9ZCSNajtm84gk1SCQUh-3-lB8WktgLVcR1BK8jLq0bbdrH-4m88n6lsKyBylYSw4hZoFun3DwS0XBaz8Folp45dWiIpcvlQCLJqT73Vt-afs_zs0ndoO3RoXuNj2LDg51TE/s1600/009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirNXNwMgfK9ZCSNajtm84gk1SCQUh-3-lB8WktgLVcR1BK8jLq0bbdrH-4m88n6lsKyBylYSw4hZoFun3DwS0XBaz8Folp45dWiIpcvlQCLJqT73Vt-afs_zs0ndoO3RoXuNj2LDg51TE/s320/009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Pillows are an easy and inexpensive way to update a room. They are so easy to sew. This is a picture of pillows I made for the living room a while back. You can use neutral pieces of furniture and change pillow covers during seasons or holiday., if you have pillow covers that are removeable, this is a really inexpensive update.<br />
<br />
I use an evelop closure for pillows that are not used very often such as the Euro pillows for my bed. These are the easiest to make. Here is picture of the back. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw4dAjMc_HwbDScbQUcx9kP0r53e0EmrK2HTE8OolDkqN0Hk9tRFNnJ8I8ne5ZMLV6JJ271MIR6qVBUn15zOsgoflYj9Q0DSWQN78GdaMZUJZYSiabbzF9FDM-4Awg8lL1eNHTjaOBigQ/s1600/005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiw4dAjMc_HwbDScbQUcx9kP0r53e0EmrK2HTE8OolDkqN0Hk9tRFNnJ8I8ne5ZMLV6JJ271MIR6qVBUn15zOsgoflYj9Q0DSWQN78GdaMZUJZYSiabbzF9FDM-4Awg8lL1eNHTjaOBigQ/s320/005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I made a flange on the edges to give it a custom look.<br />
<br />
If it is a pillow I use alot such as couch pillows, I used covers with invisible zippers. These can be sewn with cording, edging, or fringe to give it a custom look.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhryeirDvjBHJdM5w1VDG4nv1y35k2C_8zb9zThyphenhyphenfWVxQXie8ct36xwL0wA5eyWjGLojfetNW7So-YDv_j_5QX1jbO_iGzIRdgV2v8nElyhoVC1GswJyI1STPTMbbEvTE7hyza3ig1p9zw/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhryeirDvjBHJdM5w1VDG4nv1y35k2C_8zb9zThyphenhyphenfWVxQXie8ct36xwL0wA5eyWjGLojfetNW7So-YDv_j_5QX1jbO_iGzIRdgV2v8nElyhoVC1GswJyI1STPTMbbEvTE7hyza3ig1p9zw/s320/007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
If you look closely, you can see the invisible zipper. <br />
<br />
I also will use an invisible zipper for just plain seams.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHHP7ZwvJkJ0LAjmc3TC5wmaa88FRHie_7L-C1hl3mCkhZuF3BmBGG_LVT3omyS4AkvOPiRFOExXStnZ45tKzgUzlnHNToU9pdMOdU1hRTpfwqXlnpX-MD-WsLV0GwCM32twzDnZjQ6u8/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHHP7ZwvJkJ0LAjmc3TC5wmaa88FRHie_7L-C1hl3mCkhZuF3BmBGG_LVT3omyS4AkvOPiRFOExXStnZ45tKzgUzlnHNToU9pdMOdU1hRTpfwqXlnpX-MD-WsLV0GwCM32twzDnZjQ6u8/s320/006.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The possibilities are endless. Go to a large fabric store such as Lewis and Sharon, Forsyth Fabrics, or Calico Corners. These can be made with a yard of material. I buy my pillow forms from <a href="http://www.fabric.com/">www.fabric.com</a>. I can get feather inserts for about $10 - $15. They are located in Atlanta and I can get them within 1-2 days. I see these pillows on discount at Joss and Main for $35 - $200. Even with fabric that is $50 a yard, that is only $60 a pillow.<br />
<br />
If this overwhems you, just RUN to the closest TJ Maxx or Home Goods. I found these for $15 to $20 each and put them on my porch. They have invisible zippers so if I get tired of them, I still have the feather pillow insert to reuse.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhatvxlncWH8_mSrUqwuxUAqIPiWTO1N5fhimLzRl6mClVlA69aHEDzNVhxwI5UKvXzH84WKHLDZlFHhStVL7TagEFfGAWV3JNsViLUeUepd88F1NJ2O2ZbrM_UX_UKTtGWv81_zTkvqIo/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhatvxlncWH8_mSrUqwuxUAqIPiWTO1N5fhimLzRl6mClVlA69aHEDzNVhxwI5UKvXzH84WKHLDZlFHhStVL7TagEFfGAWV3JNsViLUeUepd88F1NJ2O2ZbrM_UX_UKTtGWv81_zTkvqIo/s320/008.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I am currently finishing the pillows in my master bedroom for the redo. I can't wait to show the after pictures when finished.<br />
<br />
Sewing is becoming a lost art. Even if you don't sew and get someone who does this professionally, they too are rare. Please find sewing classes and take them. Get a sewing machine and get going!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15490255539972630262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2648909703117200280.post-29238720808096308482013-03-18T18:27:00.003-07:002013-03-18T18:27:42.118-07:00Reclaiming My Saturday<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
While reclaiming my weekends, I finished a wreath project.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwISVNN4oUsIWfCNJfuysP3xeq0G2yhX-lK6rSmxxSPAdj_xAVqyXcm0sqrtmaZgNEdwmyWhH2uh98trQVdi-R4v6DblkkrJCy-tFzqEBUfy5SIbXJh7ujnTugS2PlRp721t8koBNGUJk/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwISVNN4oUsIWfCNJfuysP3xeq0G2yhX-lK6rSmxxSPAdj_xAVqyXcm0sqrtmaZgNEdwmyWhH2uh98trQVdi-R4v6DblkkrJCy-tFzqEBUfy5SIbXJh7ujnTugS2PlRp721t8koBNGUJk/s320/014.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It is made with muslin strips. I purchased the monogram at Flint River Pottery here in Cordele.<br />
<br />
I got the idea from <a href="http://downtoearthstyle.blogspot.com/2013/02/muslin-rag-wreath-for-spring.html">Down to Earth Style.</a> I did change it a little. I used 14" by 1" strips of muslin. I would recommend to those of you that want to tackle this project: get a much smaller green wire frame than you think you will need. The muslin makes it alot larger. I would also recommend purchasing your mongram first so you know what size of wire frame for the monogram to get. <br />
<br />
I have also ordered from <a href="http://southernpropermonograms.com/shop/">Southern Proper Monograms.</a> Here is the monogram I ordered to go in Livvey's room. This picture was taken at Genie's Baby Shower.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7U6p-uKuxUpCtxABuA-KUnzHOpkA4B7Rlu6KhzDbc9MdI-F9nbRNZxIMgoMyPTeTmiFr2Wnhmd_l3cdQo3kWwWAWbphv3yLe0gKtVadknz35CvrmSInUiiJmAr_0Xv6CeO6ocz1zMGAw/s1600/330.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7U6p-uKuxUpCtxABuA-KUnzHOpkA4B7Rlu6KhzDbc9MdI-F9nbRNZxIMgoMyPTeTmiFr2Wnhmd_l3cdQo3kWwWAWbphv3yLe0gKtVadknz35CvrmSInUiiJmAr_0Xv6CeO6ocz1zMGAw/s320/330.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
Monograms are really the IN thing right now. All these monograms came in raw wood and I painted them with a sponge brush and Apple Barrel and/or Behr samples paint available at WalMart, Home Depot and craft stores.<br />
<br />
I plan on making another burlap wreath that is similar and I will post it when I finish.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15490255539972630262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2648909703117200280.post-70598815559622001292013-03-17T17:12:00.000-07:002013-03-17T17:12:05.189-07:00Reclaiming the BathThis is a project I did last fall. This is the hall bath that was used by the kids. Here is the before picture after we had started demolition.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj40a_yAuURrLWgmoBLS8vUSu5VDPOQxH-I693ATqihUSOzAk6-Gd6u6DFzty-riMI4wij7ccYUpIdiCRUy2jqyTKDs96qu85T4nJfE2a8lusjSYOpGZEhnY3l8JNRbCc79S5xbNbqL14c/s1600/277.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj40a_yAuURrLWgmoBLS8vUSu5VDPOQxH-I693ATqihUSOzAk6-Gd6u6DFzty-riMI4wij7ccYUpIdiCRUy2jqyTKDs96qu85T4nJfE2a8lusjSYOpGZEhnY3l8JNRbCc79S5xbNbqL14c/s320/277.JPG" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
You really cannot tell it but it had a wall that had a saloon door. The shower was brown and we had it repainted white with a new technique. If you have a good shower or tile but not the right color, I would highly recommend using this technique. We used a company out of Albany GA. We replaced the brown toilet with a new white one. We gutted the vanity and replaced the flooring. After accessorizing, this is the finished product.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The wall is a light grey/blue. We put a shelf above the towel bar. The shower curtain was a steal at TJMaxx for $14. The ginger jar is from the Nat Berkus collection at Target and I got it on clearance.<br />
<br />

The two small jars are antique cream jars. They belonged to my grandmother.<br />

The faucet is bamboo shape. I got a bargain. I went into Home Depot one day to get something random and they had these faucets for $20 each. I had just purchased a plain jane one for $90. Needless to say, I returned the $90 and bought 3 of the $20. One for this bath and 2 for my master bath when I redo it. $60 for 3 faucets, not bad. And did I mention they are beautiful!<br />
<br />

What to do with a large wall. I purchased this iron work at Hobby Lobby for 1/2 price. I have 2 wrought iron sconces that I will probably hang.<br />

The zebra towels were purchased at TJMaxx on clearance. They are between gray and silver. They really give the room a transitional look.<br />

Instead of a light fixture, we opted for recessed halogen lights. They give just the right light without competing with the mirror and vanity.<br />

I put down black and white granite tile for the flooring. I still need to paint the closet door black. I'll post some more pictures of the sconces and the painted door.<br />

Hope you all had a great weekend.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15490255539972630262noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2648909703117200280.post-11145342601185593172013-03-10T17:46:00.000-07:002013-03-10T17:46:43.795-07:00Reclaiming the Guest Room to the NurserySince becoming a grandparent, I now have a need for a nursery. So I decided to redo the guest room into the nursery. Since we are empty nesters, we really don't need a guest room any more. I have plenty of empty beds. I wanted to have a twin bed for the grandkids as they get older, but also have a place where we can sleep in there if needed. Plus it gives Thomas's brother Ronnie a place to sleep when he comes each Thanksgiving. I still want to get an area rug and I want Thomas to build a growth chart with a barn old barn wood (that's another post). Here is how it turned out. <br />

The picture above the crib is Livvey (my granddaughter at 2 weeks of age). The rocker was purchased at an antique auction when I was pregnant with my first child and I rocked my children in it and I'm planning to rock my grandchildren in it too. <br />

The doll was my doll when I grew up. It is such bad shape. My parents kept buying me new ones but I would just take the new clothes off of them and put them on my doll and then keep the new doll for others to play with when I had friends over. The mercury glass owl, other mercury glass jars, and lamps were purchased at Home Goods or TJ Maxx.<br />

The nightstand belonged to my mom and I painted it silver (Martha Stewart paint from Home Depot) and the pulls thundercloud (also Martha Stewart). The Precious Moments figurine is for adoption, a gift from my parents (I was adopted). The frame from TJ Maxx.<br />

This is a close up of the picture. I absolutely love it. All the mirror frames are from Target. The curtains are from West Elm and I purchased extra curtains and made the bed skirts.<br />

I purchased the changing table at a local used furniture store. It was in bad shape but I loved the bow front. After patching and repairing I painted it Espresso Beans (Behr from Home Depot) and replaced the pulls with Martha Stewart collection at Home Depot. I think it turned out beautiful.<br />

I love this photo. Livvey was caught pulling her Mom's hair. The angel was hand made by Cissy Chorley for my children. She was a friend of my parents and we once lived across the street from her. She was the most Godly woman I knew and my children always trick or treated at her house. She knew how to make them feel so special.<br />
